So I visited the United States, and at a restaurant I ordered an entree, and they served me something big enough to be a main course.

Is this why Americans are so fat? At least the meal was cheap; cost $9.65 pre-tip, so I got change from a $10 bill

Do you mean an appetizer? An entree is the main course. Appetizers tend to be big at many restaurants (Outback, Texas Roadhouse, TGIFridays, Chilis, Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays, O'Charleys, etc) though because a lot of people just order them instead of the full meal.
