Hongqiao station in China feels like a self-contained city. It's not the most comfy place, but it's very massive and impressive just to see in person.

I used to live near a smaller train/bus station. It was kind of nice. Crowds were very rare. You can usually show up for your train 5 minutes before it leaves, and buy a ticket at the counter, because there are no lines at the window.

That's exactly what I love. No need to leave home 3 hours before. Even if the entire town gathers at the station it's not gonna take long.
Where I live (in the pic above) you can show up a 10 minutes before, have a coffee and relax for a while. Then go and buy a ticket right before the train arrives. Never any problems.

Oh it's lovely. Winters are pretty good, I live in middle/north Sweden so it's kinda perfect, -15 or -20 Celsius and a few feet of snow.
