Osaka is a fun city, and Soto Zen is probably one of the only truly valuable religio-philosophical traditions.

They have one of the richest intellectual histories, but for most of history they were a cultural backwater to China. They overcompensated for this in the 20th century by becoming ultra-nationalists, which caused a huge international backlash, and now Japan is still recovering from that sense of cultural shaming.

The East Asian honor system coupled with ultra-modern urban lifestyles has led to unnatural social isolation, which has led to everything from depression and suicide to an aging population since people put careers above family.

Further, because Japan developed so independently of mainland Asian cultures, and because media is so unique (different movies, sports, and even film, prioritizing anime over action films due to lower production costs), it's hard for anyone else to really understand or connect with many Japanese.
