Yes there are laws but they are never enforced. While you can't be forced to work more than 40 hours, if you don't you probably won't ever get a promotion. Not to mention that a lot of jobs pretty much require you to be "on call" 100% of the time, ie many companies expect you to still be responding to emails and phone calls after work hours.

Not him but I think it varies by how it's measured. The average work week in America is 34 hours but I think it factors in unemployed people. Working more that 8 hours a day for wagies is very common though.
