Nah, most African countries are better or only just as bad as India when it comes to literacy, sanitation and extent of poverty. I read somewhere that the only reason why India appears better us because the rich in India are richer than those in Africa, but the "intensity of poverty" is actually worse in India than in Africa, bar countries like Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Somalia etc. For its HDI India has an unusually low literacy rate and number of people living in extreme poverty. Afghanistan and Bhutan have lower HDIs but have significantly lower percentage of people living in dire poverty. Also, Africa is generally a lot cleaner than India, possibly due to lower population density. Nigeria has twice the percentage of people connected to the internet than us for instance.

I've been to Lagos once on business. Hotel wasn't in the central business district for whatever reason and there were four armed guards outside the gates of the hotel and I was in a three-car motorcade with a few other coworkers. Everyone there is shifty as fuck and their eyes seem "hungry". I don't even know how to describe it. It's by far the most unsettling place I've ever been, I'm sure it'd be worse in a place like Sierra Leone or something.
