in the first dozen pages it threw out truckload of illustration and other random words and I ended up spending a fair bit of time looking them up online, for further context since the mangaka assumes the reader is already familiar with all that
it was eye opening to learn a little about the Chinese zodiac system when looking up the phrases 戌年 and 干支 were thrown out

I've been learning Japanese for just over a week now. What are some things that I can add to my studying routine? I feel like the progress I'm making is slow and genuine, but I can't help but feel that I'm not doing enough.

Right now all I really do is review hiragana and katakana in Anki. I get very few cards a day and it takes me less than 20 minutes to complete both sets. My printer is still broken so I haven't been able to practice (let alone learn) writing of any kind.

I guess the next step is to learn kanji, but I've yet to get a physical copy of The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course.

The more complex the writing system the more stroke order matters. It's like writing words left to right instead of putting down the rightmost letter first before going to the first one.

Maybe my first response was worded poorly, so I'll try to explain myself a bit better. I already intend to spend most of my time reading / I already intend to "read more". What I'm asking about is study methods/material to supplement it in order to speed up the process a little bit here and there and start production practice with more knowledge of the technical side of things and stuff like grammar guidelines that might not be as easy to infer through reading. I'm N3 at best, but here are my two cents:

- Your individual kanji study seems fine. If you want to refine it, start grouping a bit of similar ones and study their difference - both in radicals and on meaning, trying to find ways to remember why they have certain bits that others don't;
- Reading is good, but you won't get it solidified until you actually need to USE it. Lang-8 is an okay practice method, but it doesn't allow you to output enough material to git gud. Join a MMO guild, discussion forums, get IM friends... the grinding is very important for developing quick thinking and "muscular memory", Lang-8 won't test you on this kind of efficiency.

Something I always thought about doing, but never did, was picking elementary school grammar books, to learn like a kid (meaning no complicated grammatical terms). So I'm in a situation where almost every week I have to be away from home for 2 days/nights, and I cannot study (not a "I don't want to use Anki on my phone thing, but I'm busy and by the time it's time for bed I'm utterly exhausted.). Anki is the only good way to acquire a workable vocabulary aside from living in Japan. My suggestion is to use the study ahead function, which allows you to complete the next day's reviews early. Do your normal reviews in the morning, then study ahead for the days you'll have to miss the next day. Alternatively you could split things up by reviewing ahead for just one day, and then doing two days' reviews when you get back.

I did core 6k up to 3k from sept to dec last year. (4 months) After that i started my own deck. As you can see, i also tried all sorts of things such as writing vocab down and such which really inflated the time i was doing anki in those days.
