Just how much of what I assume Japan to be like based on my extensive anime experience is a lie?
I was pretty distressed when I found out anime is looked down upon in mainstream Japanese society.
Any other myths that need busting?

Japanese "cuisine" in is just fish and vegetables, something you can find anywhere else
Modern Japanese society is deeply degenerate and soulless, everyone is trying to fuck each other over because it's all about climbing as high as possible on the corporate ladder or get stuck in a depressing office monkey position working 90 hours a week for shit pay.
Also, Japanese society do not accept foreigners. Even Chinese people who have lived in Japan for generations are looked down upon. This is why this "English teacher in Japan" is stupid, because you will never, ever, ever be accepted by Japanese people, you will always be seen as a second-class citizen, an inferior inhabitant.

I lived in Japan until I was 14, I can answer some questions.
Japan is a very insular society. If you're white they're incredibly friendly, but you're always going to be an outsider. They don't like white people marrying their wimmenz and trying to become Japanese. They like you to stay a foreigner.
They're a very polite society (maybe it'll be easier for you as a Brit) but there are some weird rules. They see laughing and showing teeth as "boorish" for example.
I'm trying to think of other stuff but it's been 15 years since I was there. You can ask me other stuff if you want.

How are they like to black people IRL?
The black people in anime are often portrayed as the stereotypical big, strong and mature guy, though sometimes a bit clumsy.

There were a couple black kids at my school, they seemed ok. I've never been black before so don't really know what it's like on the streets.
When we went on field trips random Japanese would just run up and take pictures with the redheads and black kids. They're a bit of an oddity.

Also quit basing your views on anime. Seriously you'll embarrass yourself, it's not at all like the real world. Watch live action Japanese stuff if you're interested in learning about modern culture. It's not likely to be a perfect representation but much closer than blue haired assholes piloting robots in space.

>boorish
the Japanese I have met are perfectly fine with laughing and showing teeth when smiling. Maybe that was because so many Japanese used to have (and many still have) bad teeth?

I don't think anime is necessarily looked down upon. For example, watching a Ghibli film or even One Piece would be seen as completely acceptable.

Yea? I mean I'm talking about 15 years ago so I'm sure stuff has changed. I just remember teachers and moms chastising me for being "too loud" or "too crazy" when laughing and my mom told me that its rude to show teeth. My family is white though so maybe we just misunderstood something

I'm sure things have changed in the last 15 years. To be fair though, basically everyone I know is a university student. They might just not care.
