Seems like a solid theory but I think the twang is probably derived from the Northern Irish accent somehow. It's probably been posted before, but there's an island off the coast of Virginia where people descended from early colonists speak with what are basically West Country English accents due to isolation. No guarantee they weren't seen as an oddity back then too though.
