The Hauteville family descends from Hiallt, a Norseman active in 920, who is credited with founding the village of Hialtus Villa (Hauteville) in the Cotentin of Normandy.

Roger Hauteville, nicknamed The Great Count, was a Norman nobleman who became the first Count of Sicily from 1071 to 1101.

It was Robert who began the conquest of Sicily as he declared war against Byzantium with vigour.

Sicily had seen 250 years of Arab control. Into this, the Normans came intending to conquer

Politically supreme, the count also became master of the insular church.

Frederick II Hohenstaufen was King of Germany, of Italy, of Burgundy, of Sicily, and of Jerusalem.

The Saracens had a good opinion of him, so it was no surprise that after five months the city of Jerusalem was handed over to him.

As the Patriarch of Jerusalem refused to crown him king, he set the crown on his own head.

The fact that this was regarded in the Arab as in the Christian world as high treason did not matter to him..

Frederick was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome by Honorius III, on 22 November 1220.

He viewed himself as a direct successor to the Roman emperors of antiquity

He was frequently at war with the papacy. Pope Gregory IX went so far as to call him an Antichrist.

Speaking six languages (Latin, Sicilian, German, French, Greek and Arabic), Frederick was an avid patron of science and the arts.

He often sent letters to the leading scholars of the time (not only in Europe) asking for solutions to questions of science, mathematics and physics.

Frederick II is listed as a representative member of the sixth region of Dante's Inferno, that of the heretics, who are burned in tombs.

Ludwig II is sometimes called the Swan King, Mad King Ludwig or der Märchenkönig (the 'Fairy Tale King').

He succeeded to the throne aged 18. His kingdom of Bavaria sided with Prussia against France, and after the Prussian victory it became an autonomous part of the new German Empire.

Ludwig was notably eccentric. He disliked large public functions and avoided formal social events whenever possible.

The king enjoyed traveling in the Bavarian countryside and chatting with farmers and labourers he met along the way.

His real interests were in art, music, and architecture. One of the first acts of his reign, a few months after his accession, was to summon Richard Wagner to his court.

Ludwig used his personal fortune to fund the construction of a series of elaborate castles.

His Neuschwanstein Castle was used by Walt Disney in the twentieth century as the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castles at Disney Parks around the world.

in american colleges you have to have a certain amount of hours studying a language (spanish, french, german being the most popular) in order to graduate with a degree. normally it's one to two semesters, each course you take equates to a select amount of credits. you need so many credits to graduate

ah right uni works different over here
we focus more than you lot, you don't need random shit like this to pass, you just study what you're there to study
>>
>>77295847
what's funny is that your A level system is far more encompassing and intensive than anything we yanks do in high school. most of these fluff uni extracurriculars are less intensive than A levels.
>>
>>77295860
it's reasonably intensive but it's not very wide ranging
you only do 3 subjects if brainlet/lazy, 4 or 5 if you're a nerd
>>
>>77295860
>>77295833
so yanks literally pay $150,000 for a piece of paper?
sounds like they don't actually study anything beyond holistic ""education"" courses, no specialiation

>>77295891

>>
>>77295891

we do specialize its only that we do extracurriculars as well and the result is that our uni is longer.

>>
>>77295907
it's all fucked now though
the international baccalaureate is getting bigger now which is 6 subjects + 3 extracurriculars, and you gotta choose at least one from science, one from maths, one language and one humanities
>>
>>77295904
we have majors too but every course is related to your degree
for example with mine (commerce) there are six compulsory units outside majors but they all make sense (one is for business analytics, another for accounting basics etc)
>>77295907
so how long is uni for you then? it's three years for most undergraduate courses
>>
>>77295891
You major in a field of study. The bulk of your courses and credit hours go to that. If you major in biology, the majority of your courses are science courses. Most taking science courses go on to post-baccalaureate education like a master's, phd etc. College is more like a stepping stone where you prove you're capable of the work load expected of you in higher education if you choose to go that route. But it costs a lot of money and grad schools are highly selective
>>
>>77295951
this is an alternative to a levels by the way
>>
>>77295886
We started maths in 5th year I think, then did 3 others 6th and upper 6th.
I barely remember. Been a while.
>>
>>77295958
so then yeah, you pay $150,000 for a piece of paper that says you're ready to do the big boy stuff without actually learning anything useful
>>
>>77295952
>so how long is uni for you then? it's three years for most undergraduate courses
It's four, but I haven't finished. I'm only a few classes short of being able to do three, and if I take a full four I can graduate with two degrees.

it's just an a level alternative that is more consistent. It's usually for the smart kids though, cos it's broader and you have the chance to do more work/get better grades (A-Levels are kind of bad at distinguishing good students from really good students)
>>
>>77295970
Did you not read what I said? Bachelors do specialize. They only are padded, and the result is that bachelors are four and not three years. Anyway, I literally have a surplus in money from what is paying for my university degree. That price is Ivy League.
>>

I thought IB still held the same weight as A levels even though you have to do more work?
>>77295972
it's just a high school course for international schools
if you're an expat kid in japan you probably intend to go back to america/ the UK for uni but you can't do your home country's schooling system because the school won't provide it. so they have this standardised program that's the same across the world

don't know what "joint" honours is, but we have honours for most bachelors degrees where you add a year on and do more advanced courses
double degrees are different where instead of doing a bachelor of commerce (single degree) you do bachelor of commerce/ arts or bachelor of commerce/ law
you often go from a three year degree to a four or five year degree, and while single degrees give you room for two majors you can get three in a double degree

Karl August, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, was noted for the intellectual brilliance of his court.

Under his rule. Weimar became the intellectual centre of Germany, known as Weimar Classicism.

One of the first acts of the young duke was to summon Goethe to Weimar.

He had early faced the problem presented by the decay of the Holy Roman Empire, and began to work for the unity of Germany

He was the prime mover in the establishment of the league of princes

I've just been thinking about how carefree i was when i was 5, and how ill never be able to be as happy as that ever again

those days i didn't compare myself to anyone else
i didn't think i had any deficiencies and i wasnt insecure about anything
i didn't have any worries, and woke up each day with a clear mind
i didn't think about the longterm and had no goals or targets to stress about
i never worried about what my friends were thinking, i just assumed they would stick by me
and when i did have a bad day my mum would sing me a lullaby and give me my favourite teddies to help me sleep

and i will NEVER be able to have that oblivious simple existence ever again

it makes me think of Flowers for Algernon, and it make me sort of think maybe i should get a lobotomy - id be happier i think

im crying again now

Napoléon François was the son of Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French.

His nickname was L'Aiglon ("the Eaglet"), and he was known as the king of Rome, the title of the heir apparent.

Napoleon lived in Austria and was known as "Franz", his second given name. In 1818, he was awarded the title of Duke of Reichstadt by his maternal grandfather, Emperor Francis.

Fearful of anyone in the Bonaparte family regaining political power, his budding military career gave some concern to the monarchies of Europe.

In 1832, he caught pneumonia and died of tuberculosis at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

On 15 December 1940, Adolf Hitler ordered the remains of Napoleon II to be transferred from Vienna to the dome of Les Invalides in Paris.

>you can still do whatever you want as an adult
Except own a house :^)

More seriously I've been thinking about that a lot recently. Children seem to be the only people who truly know a home. As an adult there's always the possibility you could lose it (if rented, or even just if it burns down), or just have to move for work purposes. You're always a traveller with various degrees of encampment, it's never like being a child where you just know a home and have your room within it without thinking about the wider order of things.

I mean maybe NEETs who never made it as far as university and who's parents have had the (mis?)fortune to stay in one place are the same, but that's quite a small demographic.
