We call it Reißverschlussverfahren (merge), according to a law drivers on the right-hand lane must let you in. But you have to be careful of course and must blink.

Actually it's not. Or at least not when your parents take care of you. Children need lots of clothing, shoes, food, medicine, a bike,... but if your parents save the money for alcohol or w/e it can be moderately lucrative, yes. We have something called "Reissverschlusssystem" (zipper system) for that. You let one car merge, the guy behind you lets one car merge, etc. Like a zipper, figuratively. even most people here don't adhere to that or are too stupid to do it, put when done properly, it's quite efficient.

Also northern Germany has the prettiest girls at least imho. Saxony isn't too shabby either but most are lower classes and dress/style the part and make themselves unattractive.

In the US Army, Europe, especially German assignments are seen as absolutely ideal. We get not only our US holidays off, but all of the German religious and other holidays off too. This isn't the case so much anymore, but the idea still stands. To stereotype, Americans think of good beer, beautiful women and scenery, castles, nazis, ect in a very safe, structured and bureaucratic country. A lot has changed, most US Kaserns are closed, there are fewer soldiers and many more German civilians that manage the US-NATO presence in Germany.

I was stationed in Germany from 2005-2007 and I had zero expectations besides what I said above. I loved it. Then, they gave a very detailed 30 day long language and cultural class, now its summarized for two days. You learn the umlaut is to be typed with an 'e' because of keyboards, and a couple ways to say 'Eine bier, bitte'.

We are not permitted to wear our uniforms outside the kasern.because of terrorism. Used to, for commuting and official business, but no longer. If you see 8 guys with dumb haircuts packed into an ordinary seeming minivan, that's us. We probably even have loaded weapons. We do military movements in civilian vehicles now, even when it's armed escort or to guard something or another.

I'm in contact with NATO soldiers, especially Bundeswehr. The latter I especially remember around 2004, when they still had conscripts. They were tasked for guarding a half-abandoned US kasern and built this bunker made of sandbags and posted a soldier with a machinegun inside. The conscripts I saw as college freshmen wearing a soldier's uniform. I once came through that gate with absolutely drunk, asked the guard if I see his G36. He shrugged, took out the ammo and handed to me. It was really heavy. That's a dumb war story for you.

Its not like that anymore since all I deal with now are German officers or senior enlisted, who are very professional. They love to shake hands, IDK if that is a German thing or these German officers are told Americans demand and love handshakes in their own cultural interaction classes. I am forever shaking hands with German soldiers and civilian contractors that work with us, too. Ending conscription, was was good decision, whoever made that, in my opinion.

I've only been to Heidelberg's kasern and it's bahnhof,, because of the big PX or the shopping center on post there, or used to be there.

Yeah, I know! Trust me I was introduced to Germany during the Bush administration. A typical conversation with a German in 2006 would immediately regress into them essentially recalling verbatim from memory something in English they read of a political flyer or pamphlet or article they read somewhere or something.

Only thing stronger than German self-loathing is disdain for Americans. I already know.

With Germans you can either refute their basic points, or shout them down. I did both, depending on their ability with English, or how drunk I was.

That said you folk have a tendency to veer right away into politics or news for conversation. In America, we avoid politics, because you can never know who is a bat-shit naive liberal or a bat-shit Trump supporting right-winger and everyone has a gun or something. Also we know you Germans get your news from awful, biased sources (German news media, Die Spiegel, ect), We do too, so we know it when we see it.

I get maybe Germans can't think of much to talk about besides politics or news from what they hear, because Germans mostly hate talking about themselves or family, work, or money, ect, Germans see an American and can only think to talk about all this American shit they keep hearing in the news. Probably more likely.

I love Germany, love Germans, I'm used to such things. It's good that Germans speak English because my German is horrible.

Myself, I know some German, shitty German since I can't talk to Bavarians in German.... but understand soldiers here do not choose to be stationed in Germany. They are brought to Germany for example, have a job fixing some equipment, or to crew a tank, to handle ordinance, or something. Or they are liaison officers or trainers, or often, highly skilled civilians or special forces who have a deeper understanding. Most soldiers get plucked out of shitty places in the USA from the deep south or Texas where military bases are and plopped into Germany and due to increasing military-civilian separations, don't need to know much German anyways. It's completely random. I got here a second time totally on chance.

Soldiers mostly stay on their kansern, when they leave it's in the local area and they only stay around for 3 years, at the most. The regulation forces them to move to another post. To prevent 'good-ol-boy' networks and corruption.

So yeah, they do not ever learn German because they will rarely interact with actual Germans, unless they wander off like any other US tourist. When they do work with Germans, these are specially vetted people with good knowledge of English.

My cousin is an Luftwaffe officer stationed at Holloman's right now!
His older brother is a Luftwaffe officer too and was stationed there in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina. He has told me that they've offered their help to the Pentagon, because they've had a field hospital and experience with floods (there are huge floods in Germany every few years). But the Pentagon refused, they didn't want to see Germans helping Americans he said.
