Except they won't. One of the main objectives of NATO was to contain Russias sphere of influence over Eastern Europe. Should the US not come to the aid of any NATO nation should they be attacked, then it undermines the whole point of NATO. NATO members would leave the pact knowing the US won't protect them, and Russia will be free to expand Westerly over the great European plain. In turn, it all returns back to pre-WW1 borders where Europe is a power struggle of alliances and pacts, which will create wars, wars the US will be dragged into.

Its in the best interest of America to keep Russia at bay with NATO and stop European nations fighting.
