It depend on where you hear it. The Ukrainian they speak on the wester part of a country sounds more like Polish without "pshe", I can hardly understand 10% of it. The language they speak on the eastern part has lots of inclusions from Russian and generally sounds very alike Russian. I may understand like 50% of it perfectly, 40% a bit harder and the rest 10% gap I just fill with context assumptions. What is a pure Ukrainian and where it starts - is a question that the Ukrainians themselves can't answer. This is one of the main reasons of Ukrainian national self-identity crisis, actually.
