He wanted an Islamic coalition, where he invited everyone. But Hekmatyar and later the Taliban refused.
He wanted free elections.

When Hekmatyar sworn to enter Kabul ''with the sword'' He answered that then he'll protect the people.

He called out the Saudis and Pakis for what they where doing. Hell even in August 2001 he warned that Al-Qaeda under the protection of the Taliban is planning terrorist attacks on the West.

The man wasn't without fault, but who else would you have liked? Among the Mujahadeen, he was by far the best
