Well it depends on how far away you live from the shopping center. My house personally is maybe about 2 miles away. But there are others that are much further, maybe like 5 or 6 miles away from the shopping center (at least where I live).

I suppose the main issue with riding a bike everywhere is all the traffic. You have to constantly stop and make way for cars which pack the streets everywhere. Pretty much nobody bikes except for exercise, everyone has cars.
>>

>you have to constantly stop and make way for cars which pack the streets everywhere.
This is because you don't plan for having bicycling traffic, tho. And as for everyone having cars, yeah we all have cars here too, but riding bikes is healthy, easy, and even trendy.

>>77131309
Ok, that is way too far. Nobody would want to ride their bike to work if they have to commute that far.

Well as far as work goes, one of the biggest trends in America is for people to live in the suburb, and then work in the city. That means they have to make a huge commute every day. Tons of traffic, 8 lane freeway packed with cars in both directions. The commute might take an hour or more each way. There really is no reasonable way to do it on a bicycle (at least for most people).

Especially because they haven't built any bike lanes for that purpose, you will have to take detours through all the housing developments and suburbs

Lmfao, I can't believe some of you choose to live there. I'm happy we don't have any extreme weather in Norway. We had this so-called "100 year storm" in 1992, it made some destruction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year%27s_Day_Storm
Estimated strongest wind in Norway during the hurricane was 45 meters/s on average over ten minutes (mean wind). Strongest wind based on short-term throws was estimated at 65 m/s.

This is still pretty low compared to the katrina hurricane you had, for example, which I believe had 75m/s mean wind.

It's definitely the highest quality roofing, but nevertheless our houses always end up looking really similar and absolutely boring because no one is willing to spend extra money on distinctive features or decoration.

I've already posted the wood house with the thatched roof earlier. Another roofing material that looks really nice is slate. Don't know if Bolan has regions with slate deposits.

Yes, and in some regards they can be worse (often on smaller blocks than American ones and in some suburbs you can find the exact same house several times). But I've never seen anything as poorly laid out as that in my entire life. Also unlike American suburbs our suburbs are much smaller.

Brick 100% of the time. As for roofing, it's either corrugated metal or tile, no exceptions. This if for the typical new home that you'd find in a typical suburb.

Pic related is the worst you'd typically find, imagine this x100 with slight variations between each house.

Corrugated roof is cozy as fuck, I imagine with a bit of noise insulation it's the best sound in the world to fall asleep to when it's raining. Family used to have a weekend bungalow with a corrugated plastic roof over the porch, and even the plastic rain sound was cozy as can be.

>>77139844
Sure, but can't you ride in your free time instead of riding to work? I like riding as an exercise and recreation, not as the means of transportation. Do you take a shower at work and change once you get there? Sounds like a hassle. Or you are not even breaking sweat? Then it is not really an exercise.

>>77139948

I like riding whenever I can like most people here. It's something we have to do, it's something we want to do. Sun, rain, snow or hail. It doesn't matter, and yes most Swedish workplaces have a changing room and showers available if need be. My boss rides over 45 minutes to and from work every day, spends 30 minutes in the gym with me and the others then shower and start working.
People simply like to be active, it's fun.
A car isn't a status symbol here, a bike is a perfectly good vehicle for all ages and most companies and businesses have more parking spaces for bikes than for cars.
And this isn't something new here, the bicycle has been the number one mode of transport since the 1910s.
Even our army had/have a bicycle mounted platoon.

This.

Pretty much everyone I know uses their car as the last mode of transport they have, for like going shopping etc when you need to transport a lot of stuff.
My parents are 60+ years old, pretty wealthy and both ride around on electrical bicycles (you still have to pedal, it's just electrical assist) for example.
I sold my car years ago, had no need for it and just the gas was like 1/8th of my salary each month..
I just rent a car if I do need it. Doesn't happen often. I have a Bullit cargo bike, I've even moved all my furniture using it when I changed apartments.

Depends entirely on the basement. The nicer the house, the more likely it is to have a "finished" basement. In my house, the basement was shitty and flooded with a few inches of water every spring, so we just stored tools, washer/dryer, food, cleaning supplies, and unused things there.
>>
>>77141795

the suburbs are horrible because they are alienating. when you go about your daily life, you seldom see other people's faces. That sounds trivial, but it makes a difference. everyone's isolated in their detached homes, in their individual cars. when you can't walk anywhere, you don't develop the same relationship with the place around you. when there are no public spaces, when you're functionally isolated from the people around you, and when the restaurants and shops around you are chain stores that are not unique to any place, your neighborhood and community suddenly become places not worth caring about.

you could be lost in a suburb in new york, pennsylvania, tennessee, kentucky, illinois, or nebraska. But you would never be able to tell them apart from each other, save for the road signs or perhaps different topography. They are monotonous and soul crushing.

have you ever been stranded in a suburb because your car broke down? there's nowhere for you to go. Every inch of space around you is privately owned. there are no stores to go to the bathroom in or to buy a bottle of water. There are no benches to sit down on. there's no one on the sidewalk to ask for help because no one walks. you totally alone and alienate

the American suburb is a national embarrassment. I unironically want all suburban developments to be razed to the ground

t. lived in the suburbs for the first 18 years of my life and would rather die a slow death than go back
