The reason this thread exists is because these countries have historically been an influence on each other going back to the Bronze Age. There was even a period where they all had the same lingua franca, which was Greek. It wasn't until recent times that these countries have gone their seperate ways.

The term lingua franca came about around the time of the Renaissance. I used it as it's meaning is: common tongue. The Hellenistic period after Alexander the Great conquered the Mediterranean is the period I was talking about where Koine Greek was that periods lingua franca.
