The English use of "Dutch" probably comes from Plattsduuts or Nederduuts (or whatever dialect/spelling you choose that's synonymous with "Low German").
With a basic understanding of German, I can usually pick up written Dutch/Nederlander.
We also tend to call the whole country Holland, even though most of us know it's just a region.
