A lot of non-Albertans are divided about it.

For one, Alberta had an economy that was the envy of everywhere else for well over a decade. Even though we paid god knows how much in transfer payments to the rest of the country to raise their standards of living, we're still seen as benefiting at their expense because policy decisions favoured investment in the oil industry at expense of other industries. But that's not fair because Canada has always been a natural resource exporter, since the dawn of HBC, and no other provinces have successfully shaken it up enough. It's not as if we'd be some high tech wonderland if we didn't focus on exporting our crude.

And second, many people are divided about Stephen Harper, who was from Alberta, seemed to embody Alberta, and no doubt showed favouritism towards Alberta above the other provinces. But people are forgetting how almost every other Prime Minister in history showed even more obvious favouritism towards Ontario and Quebec. It's disgusting, really. Pierre Trudeau is an obvious example, with policies like his failed national energy program. They credit him for much of "Western Alienation".

And last there's the belief that Alberta is still hick country with bumblefuck yokels who get drunk and drive around fields. We play up the cowboy image to our benefit (Calgary Stampede started today and we can expect up to a million visitors to the city during the celebration).
