>Hobbi or studying languages
It's synonymous, I think. I did study French in the university for 4 years which gave me a solid background in understanding how to learn a new language (thanks to my prof, she was cool). I also attended an Arabic course for a year, and learnt Farsi a bit on my own with a good book.
>>76910219
>Are there any letters for aspirated plosives in Urdu ( kh, gh, chh, jh, th, dh ( both retroflex and dental)
A bit of background. In Arabic and Persian the /h/ sound is written with the letter ه which can take different forms in the beginning (هـ or ہـ), middle (ـهـ or ـہـ), end (ـه or ـہ) of the word or in an isolated position (ه). They are merely graphic variants of the same letter.

In Urdu these variants became two separate letters. ہ ہـ ـہـ ـه continues to denote the /h/ sound, while ھ ـھ is used to show aspiration.
I.e.: ب b, بھ bh ت t, تھ th, ٹ T, ٹھ Th etc.

So, bhai is بھائی.
بـ is /b/
ـھـ shows aspiration
ـا long vowel /a:/
ئـ is an orthography convention inherited from Arabic, it's used to separate two vowel sounds which cannot occur in Arabic (even though it's different in Hindustani).
ـى is final /i:/
>phool
پھل (u is short, thus it's not written).

Basically, when Hindi uses distinct letters for aspiratd plosives, Urdu utilises digraphs. It's not very convenient, as far as I understand, but such is life.

Unlike how you write Urdu and English, Hindi and most other Pajeet languages are written using an abugida system. The symbol क is read as 'ka' and doesn't only represent the k sound. Every individual symbol represents an entire syllable rather than a consonant or a vowel.
Look at this word ālaya. In Latin script the consonants and vowels are written as separate letters. But in Devanagari or any other abugida, every syllable has to be represented in a unique symbol. The syllables are ā, la, and ya. So while writing this in Hindi there will be three letters.
आ, ल and य. The default state of a consonant is when it is ending with the vowel a. Like क. If you want to make this ki, you should add a diacritic mark called a mātrā. Ki is कि. The diacritic mark for the i sound is added to क to change its pronunciation but it is still considered to be a single letter and not a combination of two letters.
>>
>>76928776
Although this is such a simple concept to us, it will be hard for me to explain it to you on a place like 4chan with limited space because the whole concept of an abugida system is alien to you. Just how hard I find it to understand how Urdu is written in an abjad.

Aren't there Hindu nationalists who want to eradicate Arabic borrowings in Hindi? If I were one of them, I'd be pretty embarrassed if I had to use loanwords for such simple concepts as "man" or "book".
>>
>>76929565
Pure hindi(less borrowed arabic words, more sanskritized, or whatever you call it) is mostly used for television shows which are in an ancient/mythological setting.
No one is trying to push out loanwords, but some priests also talk in pure hindi.
Also, initially the first news channel doordarshan read in pure hindi during the early years of independence, but was replaced with common hindi since general middle and lower class people couldnt understand many words.

Hindi is very rich in synonyms when it comes to nouns unlike English. Flower is phūl, pushpa, or kusum. Sun is sūraj, sūrya, ravi, bhānu, or dinkar.
Take simple concepts like
>man:
Aadmi (ādami): this is the loan word from Farsi.
Purush: this is the indigenous word from Sanskrit.
>Book:
Kitāb: from Arabic/Farsi
Pustak: indigenous
>World:
Duniya: from Arabic/Farsi.
Vishwa: indigenous
In all three cases, the loan word from Farsi is more commonly used in common speech than the indigenous Sanskritic word. However for formal purposes the tendency to use the Sanskritic word is greater. However in Urdu the Sanskritic word is typically completely absent from vocabulary.

Bro at the end of the word the short vowel 'a' is never read in Hindi except in cases like dravya, shuddha etc.
For example बेकार is bekār and not bekāra. Typically the final 'a' sound is always skipped in pronunciation otherwise you have to keep putting halant at the end of each word.
>>
>>76937179
What are you studying in murica"?
>>
>>76932142
Also Allah is अल्लाह. The ह in this case as usual represents only h and not ha. I
Ground rule: because in Hindi words rarely end with the 'a' sound, the full consonant is written and it is not made dead using the halant. Also this letter ऴ doesn't even exist in Hindi. Kahan se mila? That is a Marathi letter.
>>

Indo-European languages have many contrastive aspirated consonants, while they're barely found in the other Indo-European languages, could they adopted it the other languages.

Vietnamese only has contrastive /tʰ/ (while /kʰ/ is interchangeable with /x/ and /pʰ/ is interchangeable with /f/).
>>
>>76937472
Exactly. In south Indian languages and the original Sanskrit the final 'a' is always pronounced.
Hindi: सागर (Sāgar)
Kannada: ಸಾಗರ (Sāgara)
Even in Bengali we pronounce the final 'o' only while singing.
সাগর: Shagor while speaking and Shagoro while singing especially Robindrosongeet and more venerable forms of music.

Austroasiatic is very diversity, but it has too few resources, because apart from Vietnamese, Khmer and Mon, all other languages are spoken by ooga boogas. For example, while all Mon-Khmer languages are (mostly) analytic (although most have some infixes and prefixes) and have SVO structure, the Munda languages are agglutinative with SOV structure.
>>
Also i read that Dzongkha is a Sino-Tibetan language that very closely related with Tibetan. It's written with Tibetan script, but a lot more phonetic. I wish we had a Bhutanese anon so we can learn more about his languages (if he also speak another language).
>>

The interchangeability between /f/ and /pʰ/ and that between /x/ and /kʰ/ exists to a very large degree in Indian languages as well. Only Pakistanis are very consciously aware of the difference and have distinct separate letters for them. Ideally the sounds /x/ and /f/ were never meant to exist in both Sanskrit-derived northern languages and southern Dravidian languages. However they have come into the speech of people due to large influx of Persian and English words used in daily speech.
Look at the word akhand. It is written in Hindi as अखंड. Look at the word khatma. It is written either as खत्म or as ख़त्म. The dot (nukta) under the letter ख indicates that it should be pronounced as /x/ and not as /kʰ/ but most people outside places like Delhi and urban areas in Uttar Pradesh don't really know the difference and while writing the dot is very often skipped.
Similarly most people pronounce the word सफलता as safalata and not as saphalata as the spelling suggests even though in this case the nukta below फ (that is used to change the pronunciation from ph to f) is never written as it is derived from Sanskrit and not Farsi.
>>

Are /x/ and /kʰ/ (or /ɣ/ (ग़) and /g/) contrastive in Hindi?
>>
>>76938999
More or less. The word for "poor" ग़रीब is often read and written as गरीब because most people aren't conscious about the difference between ग़ and ग.
>>
>>76938255
Dzongkha (Bhutan), Bhutia and Lepcha (Sikkim), Garo (Meghalaya), Manipuri, Mizo and most languages in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland are all Sino-Tibetan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentinelese

>In 2006, Sentinelese archers killed two fishermen who were fishing illegally for mud crabs within range of the island. Their boat's improvised anchor failed to prevent it from being carried away by currents while they were asleep. The boat drifted into the shallows of the island, where they were killed. An Indian Coast Guard helicopter that was sent to retrieve the bodies was driven off by Sentinelese warriors, who fired a volley of arrows.[20][21]

Why won't India arrest these murderers and bring them to justice? It's on their soil.

Is India really that dysfunctional and corrupt you can even get away with double homicide without punishment?
>>
>>76941789
India has like more than 50 separatist movement going on.If they do anything to those niggers than these separatist movement will catch even bigger fire saying how indian government treat minority.
>>
>>76941789
Idk, they just want to leave them alone and pretend they don't exist. Jarawas and Onges have been arrested before but that's they are now very much in contact with outsiders. Sentinelese should just be left alone and we shouldn't have anything to do with them.
>>
>>76941956
We're talking double homicide here.
>>
>>76941871
Lmao you got it all wrong man. Sentinelese are completely isolated from the rest of the world and they don't even know that we exist. So by law we are just going to keep out of their island and avoid all contact.
>>
>>76941981
Indian lives are worthless.
>>
>>76942048
Then why don't your government try to make contact lol even though they belong to you.I'm pretty sure you can make fancy resort there in that island and make some sweet money.Truth to be told it's too late for your government to do anything now.
>>
>>76942133
They'll get diseases and get wiped out if we try most likely. Like what happened to the Great Andamanese. And please, the Jarawa lands are already turning into illegal resorts.
>>
>>76942084
>Niggers can kill natives without punishment

Wow, India really is like Europe.
>>
>>76942298
That's not the case, man. Like I said there have been instances of Jarawas and Onges being arrested. Just not Sentinelese because we know absolutely nothing about them except for a few video footages. There are no records of anyone having ever communicated with them. Not even the other tribes (One, Jarawa). The Sentinelese island appears in Onge folklore but it is very likely that the Sentinelese are unaware of the existence of the Jarawa and the Onge.
>>
>>76942402
>(One, Jarawa)
*Onge, Jarawa.
>>
>>76942402
>That's not the case, man

It literally is though. Double homicide, no arrests or investigation, let alone trial.
>>
>>76942945
It's like when a citizen gets killed by a Tiger or other wild animal in a nature-reserve, you can't bring that animal to court and punish it.

The Sentinel Island are like a Nature reserve and Sentinalese are condidered like an endangered fauna under protection. Those people were not allowed to go there and therefore the government is not responsible for whatever happens to them there.
>>
>>76937955

I've always been wondering, do you know why people in Pakistan were more receptive of institutionalizing Urdu as a national languages when non-Hindi speakers in India were reluctant from the get-go?

I know this is technically what made Bangladesh secede from Pakistan, but then again, it was probably inevitable that they would end up seceding given geography.
>>
>>76942945
>No investigation
They sent people to investigate but they failed to retrieve the bodies.
>No trial
Try convincing the tribe to send their people to court considering no one has any idea what their language sounds like.

Lets say it was an isolated village where a murder happened, if it citizens were hostile to the state, they WOULD be dealt with.
>>
>>76943647
The language is thought to be related to Onge. But you'll never know, considering they've been isolated for thousands of years.
>>
>>76944209
Yeah but who knows who the murderers were out of the whole village? How do we ask them and find out when no one knows the language or even what the language is like?

People were regretful later on but at the time most of the people (besides Bengalis). Most of the West Pakistanis were more happy to be a separate nation as they were underdeveloped under the British. Other than that the non Hindi speakers resisted Hindi because there was a vast variety of scripts and languages all over the country whereas in Pakistan most people spoke Punjabi, which is very similar to Urdu and they already used the Nastaliq script for Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi and Pashto as well as Farsi. This is why they found it easy to adapt to Urdu.

Sometimes it rains ten, fifteen, or twenty times a day; torrents are formed in an instant, and water flows in places that normally have no water. . . . Another nice thing is the unlimited numbers of craftsmen and practitioners of every trade. For every
labour and every product there is an established group who have been practising their craft or professing that trade for generations. . . . In Agra alone there were 680 Agra stonemasons at work
on my building every day.

All this discussion about Urdu and Hindi reminds me of something interesting. When my grandpa was a kid, Urdu used to be commonly taught in schools, like Hindi is today. It was known that Hindi would replace Urdu after independence, and his father made him switch to Hindi in school so that he wouldn't have problems later on.

>>
>>76949675
Not really. I don't know India but the Bengalis used the language thing as a demonstration of the difference between the two Pakistans. There were other reasons like the distance and the lack of any Bengali Prime Ministers who completed there terms and no development there etc.

But yes, there wasn't much resistance to Urdu in West Pakistan because they were well aware of the Script and the majority (around 80%) speaks Punjabi which is very similar to Urdu.
