For Russians autonomous fight for units is ok. HQ just don't know status of own units and planned operations in worst case scenarios. But actually it's right because when we begin war agains tou we jam all your communications also, and your lose al communications with your HQ and other units. Western units usually train in a platoon size because the budget is not there to train larger without notional attacks. Maybe once a year they train as a battalion in a live attack. And also once a year they are in a brigade exercise. For a small military like aus.

I was light infantry, at least we could sit around and practice bushcraft. It wasn't unusual to build wooden beds and fish traps if we were staying there a while. Build stick and thermal mat ovens to keep our clothes dry. We'd hold a lesson on how to dig a really nice shitter, with an A frame to sit on. Once we stopped giving a fuck about leaving sign.

Whereas on a platoon ex we'd patrol for a month with the rest of the company in their AO next to us, meeting enemy twice a day and also being probed at night and perhaps bugging out at one point

I wasn't sure if I felt sorry for or envied mounted guys after going to DFSW and carrying the JAV and other weapons like that. Every light battalion has that kind of weapon. Yeah I had to dig to perfection over a couple days and then go on the offensive and dig every night. But good luck seeing one of us popping up and shooting your command vehicle. One exercise we killed at least 20 ASLAV and a bunch of abrams. And they all probably didn't see it coming.

Shooting the .50 and the MK19 and the M240 at indirect targets is neat even if you have to hump them first.

There isn't a single "unidade formadora de tropa" that do not follow the basics.

I'm not a combat veteran, but the two in my platoon, a Sergeant (Bravo section leader) and Staff Sergeant, my plt sgt, will attest that they didn't fight for anything about this nation, or the Marine Corps, or their own legacy, it's just for those who they killed with, and the few who they watched get killed

If you really think that stuff matters this place probably isn't for you, especially the infantry, which is the only part that matters

I actually received flying lessons as part of my JROTC, a rare and contested chance, and I didn't much like it.

And what you say all but confirms my assumptions, I suppose I'll just have to count on the political winds shifting.
