Languages aren't about smarts. They are about two things:

-A LOT of work
-Not getting complacent with your current ability, and consistently challenging yourself to improve. including addressing your weaknesses.

Anyway I'd actually say the opposite: Just learning Chinese to B2 level or so is a lot harder than a random European language, but for native level fluency it ISN'T that much harder. For any language if you want be on par with natives you're gonna have a to read as many novels as an average native has and watch as much tv as an average high schooler has. That's a lot of fucking time. Enough that it even dwarfs the extra 500 hours or so you have to put in at the beginning because you chose Chinese instead of Italian.

Japanese is slightly harder but mostly comparable. Chinese is probably harder starting out, but has a simpler writing system and although it has tones, actually Japanese does too in a sense (specifically it has a pitch accent) but it's kept secret from you in textbooks because it's not necessary to be understood.

I am very good at learning new phonologies, but what is throwing me off is that Chinese's phonology is completely different to what I am used to, it is like starting off from square one.
