Last time we had to fight for independence was in 1808 against napoleon and we were so bankrupt our muskets didn't have bullets, so we were picking up rocks to throw.

Spain had a recent civil war, but it didn't end up changing the status quo in the end, so maybe it just didn't have enough importance to overwrite what came before.
