the words for "what", "how", "why" etc. in Spanish are not used exclusively in questions, but... everywhere, so the opening question mark serves to indicate that those words that are of regular use, should be intonated in such a way that it sounds like a question

also, the explanation I got in highschools was that the intonation for a question in spanish does the most emphasis on the first couple of words of the question and english on the ending side of it

That's why we use diacritics. The problem is with long questions that don't use them.
