They did it to themselves mostly.
They took Christianity because they just loved the whole ruling structure of the Christian kings, they betrayed their own for little.
Who's fault is that?
And ofcourse the Christians would react baldy to some savages that raid their temples and leave shit behind.
They were pests, that never established a large kingdom of their own. It was always in their thinking that they need to move elsewhere, sail down and up the rivers, cross the oceans, never about going home and building your own country at the time.
The ones that did, turned Christian because its easier to rule, less people go after your throne.
Their time passed 900 years ago, they died. All of them. And all those today who love larping and rebelling against order will grow out of it.

Religions like christianity and islam are like a kind of mental viruses, if you will. Basically, they spread in the same way a virus would, and takes posession of the 'host'. The host will try to spread to the virus. As such, christianity spread itself to areas that had developed no immunity to it.

They didn't create large empires because the land wasn't worth ruling. They sailed all over the world because that was the only non-miserable thing they could do.
