Also, two effectively insular countries, bastard sons of their counterpart neighbours who had to rely on tactics rather than numeric superiority to get what they needed.

Mutual respect and aligned goals trumps sissy friendship. We don't agree on anything except how much Spain/France suck: different religions, cultures, aspirations, climates, etc.
