Btw, both of these were ethnically mixed Austro-Hungarian townswhich were incorporated into Italy/Austria after the world wars, while the parts of their suburbs that fell under Yugoslavia were built up into new Slovenian cities (#1 in 1947 and #2 in 1920).

I can see how the fall of that empire might have caused some strange lines being drawn in the sand. I'm aware that Hungary was punished pretty heavily after WWI for some reason, losing a lot of their clay.

OP here. There's something similar where I am from. Seems as if a lot of American cities can have strange borders.
