Most Euro countries don't put their kids on "happy pills" with possible suicidal/homicidal side effects in near the numbers we do.
Many separate the smarter kids from the less intelligent ones in school so it's less like a prison environment for the smart kids.
Many also encourage the less academically oriented kids to learn trades and such instead of basically telling them they might as well kill themselves if they can't get into a good university, even of it's for some expensive joke degree where you'd make more money as a plumber.

We've always had guns, kids used to bring guns to school for shooting classes.
We've always had angry virgins.
We haven't always put still developing minds on mind-altering drugs, and our educational system hasn't always been an ever declining shitfest they just want to throw money at instead of changing.
