It wasn't stupid. French people weren't really living there, only a few fur trappers. The territory would have been conquered if it wasn't sold. Either by Americans, British, Spanish, or maybe even Mexicans. Better to sell it for a small amount when you really need the money for a war against Europe, then to spend blood and treasure and failing to prevent it from being taken anyway.

Napoleon was too busy in Europe to worry about N. America.
