I personally consider that an extremely selfish attitude but it seems that Americans have far less faith in their own society, or at least actual human component of it. There is a much larger feeling that everyone is out for themselves rather than that they are all ultimately in the same boat.

Also they don't immigrate here because most of them don't meet our immigration standards and aren't considered for refugee status. They don't immigrate because they can't unless they go so far as to marry a Canadian or learn French.
