Can you build a great career from knowing multiple languages, assuming you are not proficient in any other sphere?

Pic unrelated (however, can someone tell me her name?)

The Dutch European Commissioner speaks Limburgish, Dutch, English, German, French, Italian and Russian.

So yes.
>>
>>76362629
If you have a degree in each of them, yes.
>>
>>76362629
Yeşim Kübra.
>>
>>76368673
Thanks
>>
No. Translating will soon be obsolete, if it isn't already, due to technology.

>>76362694

And that guy has no other qualifications for his job??
>>
>>76362629
yes you can.
It's kind of hard though and you need to network alot.
what languages do you speak?
>>
>>76371637
Russian, English, Mandarin, intermediate French and Japanese
>>
>>76371679
you're already better than me, and yet I have had a few jobs. I only speak Russian, Georgian and English. Have you though about Chamber of Commerce? Speaking Mandarin is great btw.
>>
>>76371500
>text translation is the only application of language skills

how unimaginative.
>>
>>76371855
Nah, I haven't. I'm not really good at economics.
>>
>>76371679
Well, there are nice niche for you in copywriting\rewriting, good translations are priced from 45r\1000 symbols to 160\1000. It's not much, but better than nothing and can serve as side source of income. Also, synchrotranslators are hot shit, as I heard.
>>
>>76372189
I know people who just started translation there (for newsletters and such). Very easy work, and they got paid in US dollars. You don't stay in the same position for too long either

Teaching jobs are notorious for being shit but chinese business men are paying good money and you get accomodation for a lot of these jobs. 50k USd doesn't sound like much but when the apartment is supplied it's good. I know a canadian guy who went to teach and he told me that china is a great job centre for people who speak english+mando. many hire for live translation too which is good pay too.

Also theres UN jobs. You have to know atleast 3 languages. mando is super hot right now

also what this guy said>>76372370

theres also "tech nomad" jobs
>>
op are you a girl ?
>>
>>76373203
Why?
>>
>>76373317
russians girls love to learn languagues
>>
>>76372712
i forgot to mention MANVI US program which grants US citizenship after service if you're into that
>>

>No. Translating will soon be obsolete, if it isn't already, due to technology.
The people who say this are always monolingual. Sounds like wishful thinking.
>>
>>76373962
it can already be done, especially if you used a parsing language (constructed language that you translate everything into and from, designed specifically for that purpose, there are already heaps of conlangs that can function as parsing langs). I'm not really sure why it isn't widely available. Google translate just translates words, not grammar or altering words based on context/culture. You would have to train a system up for each language but it shouldn't be hard. Maybe they want to get more money out of it or something. Google itself is pretty inept at improving or expanding their services because no monies in it, I guess. Honestly I don't see how you couldn't just get linguists and engineers together to design a catch-all system that breaks everything down into linguistic terms and continues improving it's accuracy by itself, as it trains on a given language input.

>>76373437
C'est la première fois j'ai entendu de cette chose.
>>

>Translating will soon be obsolete

Not in our times. Maybe not in our century. Automatic translation doesn't work properly because it has no brains. Only humans can translate something to proper texts. Editor job can be done by humen only. At least until we invent an intelligent computer.
>>
>>76375545
No, texts need a human editor who makes decisions. Matching words and sentences to look like certain language isn't enough. It was also done by nobody yet so I highly doubt it is possible.

>Automatic translation doesn't work properly because it has no brains.
>What is neural network technology and how fast is it developing
>>
>>76375951
Show me a working thing without yor green arrows. You guys sound like communist wishful thinkers honestly. Communism at 2000, yay! Apple trees on Mars! Been there.

Again. certan translation work can probably be done by machines but not
>Literature
The beautiful language can be constructed by emotional beings only.
>Something that has some business goals, etc.
It needs additional thinking and decisions wichich is impossible to machines.
