I've been to shitty places in both.
Everyone seems to think DC sucks and is a shithole but I actually liked it. Also people tend to hate French people but I found them charming and welcoming. I speak French, so that made it easier, but Parisians still treated me coldly. Nice, Strasbourg and Lyon were very pleasant.
Maybe all of these are unpopular opinions here.

That's not true. They only do shit like seize property if you are a drug dealer and you have legal means to seek getting them back. You have to be arrested which isn't as easy as it is in Europe.

You only have to be arrested for criminal forfeiture. Civil forfeiture is directed towards the property, not the supposed owner. In addition to that it doesn't even require any proof of wrongdoing or criminal intent.

The police are actively pushing against reform in places like Colorado, since it's a not so insignificant source of income for them.

Sticking your head in the sand and saying it ain't so, is not going to change the facts. There are fucked up laws all around the world and this is one of them.
