1. Is it true that China was always much more atheistic than the other great civilizations? For instance Confucianism is a civic and ethical philosophy rather than a religious doctrine; also, Daoism does not as far as I know entertain the possibility of an afterlife.
2. How much contact did the ancient Chinese have with the civilizations of India and Western Asia for example? How about modern Indochina?

1. Yes, they didn't have a god/deity so their religous practices differ from monotheism/pantheon.
2. They were aware of other great empires (like Rome) but very little contact was established. The relationship with Indochinese states varied, but China prefered to view them as their subjects, just like everyone else they had close proximity to.
Israel is pretty smart
Confucianism was a state ideology more than a revealed religion and Buddhism is mainly a hobby practiced by dedicated monks. Average Wang just practiced some weird mix of shamanism, Buddhism, and ancestor worship.
