To the French anon who knows Japanese and wants to learn Classical Chinese / kanbun:
I'm currently studying Classical Chinese on my own using English resources, but honestly, the best resources are in Mandarin, and if you want to get deep into Classical Chinese (reading stuff that has never been translated into another language), you should really learn Mandarin. The best CC-English dictionaries (Karlgren's Grammata Serica Recensa, Cikoski's "Notes" and Kroll's dictionary) are a laughing matter next to the magisterial multi-volume Hanyu Dacidian 汉语大词典.
Although if you know Japanese you can probably use Morohashi's less magisterial but still impressive Dai Kan-wa Jiten 大漢和辞典.

If you care to learn the details of grammar, the best reference grammars are all in Mandarin too.

Unironically this. All friendships are forged with an ulterior motive. The difference is how virtuous the motive is and how graceful you use the friendship.
>>
>>76314884
Not much really. The world has taken what it found useful and otherwise moved on. Classical Chinese is positively useless.

However, there's things that continue to be very entertaining to read in the original, even though, yes, it's just entertainment at this point.

>Not long ago, the quality of Chinese cars wasn’t considered ready for prime time. When the first one showed up the Detroit auto show in 2006, its dashboard looked like it was made from popsicle sticks. Now, Hinrichs said, “the quality is very good in our plants there. China is capable of producing at the same global level standards we have everywhere else.”

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2017-06-20/china-shares-to-make-up-0-7-of-msci-index-video

>For many investors, China’s local shares represent the future. Not only is the market massive -- the second-biggest worldwide after America’s -- it’s also home to many of the companies most aligned with China’s consumer and service industries, which are seen as key drivers of the $11 trillion economy’s long-term expansion. And while the yuan has been under pressure recently, so-called A shares in Shanghai and Shenzhen give global investors exposure to a currency that’s likely to play a growing role as China expands its economic clout overseas.

>“This is the start of a process through which Chinese equities will achieve a prominence in global investors’ portfolios that reflects the size and significance of China’s domestic stock market and its economy,” Helen Wong, HSBC Holdings Plc’s chief executive of Greater China, said in a statement.

>The index compiler, which applauded China’s efforts to improve accessibility and relax control over index-linked investment products, signaled that it’s open to a bigger role for A shares if China further liberalizes its markets. Potential next steps include a bigger so-called inclusion factor, which would increase the weighting of Chinese shares in the index, and the addition of mid-cap stocks, Henry Fernandez, MSCI’s chief executive officer, said in a Bloomberg Television interview.

>“We’d like to expand the universe of shares that are available to international investors," Fernandez said.

>International money managers can buy and sell more than 1,400 domestic Chinese stocks after authorities opened the Shenzhen Connect in December, about six months after last year’s MSCI rejection. The first link with Shanghai started in late 2014.

>Inclusion in MSCI gauges could spur about $17 billion of inflows into Chinese shares, the index compiler said. By comparison, the turnover on China’s stock market on Tuesday was about $58 billion.

I hope you anons recognize how significant this change will be. Essentially, now China's financial system will be directly connected with the rest of the world. That means that China's financial system will be far more stable and trusted by international funds.
>>
>>76315633
Furthermore, it is a giant check mark for how much China has reformed.

Most importantly, the MSCI inclusion is a prestige status for China and for the reformers in China. That's similar to the Yuan inclusion in the IMF's reserve currency.
The hardliners won't be able to pull back from these reforms now because that would be politically damaging to the hardliners.

Likewise, Ford building a nice vehicle in China and exporting to the US is another check mark for the Chinese manufacturing quality and China's reformers who want China to be open to foreign investment.

Reformers = 2
Hardliners = 0
All in one day. I couldn't be happier. =]

In short, he gave people hope back then.
Hope of a clean government (which was true back then), hope for a democratic one (never so but they guaranteed that back then), hope to be fair (just like all low-class gommies).
After he's got control of china and kmt settled in taiwan, he just thought he's like emperor due to the fact that all others are just following his creation of a new govt. Hence he did stuff like emperor, making own policies that's quite shit (that lead to starvation and cultural revolution), killed ones who can threaten him and tried to brainwash as much people as possible.
Of course, he did some nice negotiations with ussr that made china revive faster though

Well, from 1949-1959 China's economy grew 8% annually and the military/diplomacy improved substantially. China also stopped the USA and allies by itself.

Mao was riding high in 1959 and all signs legitimately pointed to his crazy economic GLF actually working. This is back when most people thought Communism was more effective than capitalism.
All of these factors made him believe he was infallible and the theories supported him. He was also afraid that the CCP was full of fake commies (it was).

I can't help but emphasize that 1900-1959 Mao and 1969-1976 Mao were immensely better than 1959-1969 Mao. If only he had died in 1959....
He didn't. And he fucked up so badly I don't think he should be China's icon anymore. I also don't think he was as negative as rightwingers claim.

Maybe after Xi dada has built his 一带一路 and the economy is soaring and everyone is out of poverty then they could do it. The biggest dangers being that everyone from Tibet to Xinjiang to Hong Kong is going to want independence referendums and everything splinters like the Balkans did.

1. Dems thought they could win.
2. Analysts thought Dems could win because the polls said so.

Status quo is China claims Taiwan as its territory and Taiwan maintains de facto independence, which Tsai (smartly, in my opinion) hasn't made any effort to deviate from. However China's continued efforts to strongarm Taiwan, notably refusing them admission into a number of key international forums, even when registering as an 'independent economy'.

Still, status quo is 1 china though
Just imagine how china will let taiwan go as a cunt, when it's possible not to do so easily.
Firstly, literally no cunt have made so called effort to make taiwan a cunt other than to say fuck china in a indirect way by saying taiwan deserves more.
Same applies for okinawa, when most local (and i mean real local, not some yamato that came after meiji) will differenciate okinawa with japan, as if they're different cunt. But again, keeping it to be under japan is so easy that no one actually cares about it anymore, as the one who cared, qing is dead for a long time and yamato's the major population in okinawa already.
Secondly you need to be recognized as a cunt to be a cunt. And china (including the other 4) gets too much power they're pretty much able to cover up this part without using anything forceful.
Taiwan's independence will be done only when those non- forceful ways are not applicable, and these happens when:
1. China's in a huge mess and it cant sustain itself anymore
2. Taiwan got really mad they start war, nuked china and china got btfo'd when they don't have nuke now at 2000+17
Democracy doesn't work when the cunt is not democratic. Be it 0% agrees 1 china, Taiwan will never be a cunt when they couldn't.
Btw are you japanese or chinese? The name sounds chinese though

I'm not suggesting independence for Taiwan (I think a push for independence would only make things worse for them), just questioning why China is putting increasing pressure on Taiwan (like pulling a huge sulk at a number of recent forums due to Taiwan's inclusion) when the island state's already been 乖 as fuck and making no moves towards disrupting the status quo (apart from resisting China's pushes to disrupt their autonomy, which itself is a breach of the status quo)

That the TW populace is intoxicated with a lot of fake news and gratuitous Mainlander-hate, a lot of which is of the kind described by burgerfriend above. For example, for a time I was living in a district full of light industry (with no apparent environmental controls) that was very polluted. People there unironically said the pollution came from the Mainland.
>>

>>
>>76352943
Sure, but does that make their case for autonomy/independence any less legitimate? Taiwanese society, culture and way of life is measurably different, not to mention their government is autonomous to a point already exceeding that of Hong Kong. Just because there's a few misinformed/ultra-nationalistic idiots doesn't mean they should have the few liberties they have (autonomy of domestic affairs, affiliation with a select number of international forums) stripped away.

Not simply because she is not kmt, but also she doesn't recognize 1992 consensus. As long as she recognize 1992 consensus, it will be ok even if she is DPP, at least from the view of PRC government. But she don't. And KMT no longer believe in one china, or at least they no longer consider the possibility of reunification, all they want is maintain the status quo. So the difference between them is that KMT being more practical and don't want nominal independence but the current de facto independence while DPP being more radical and pursue complete independence
>>
>>76354334
Hmm… I'd say that taiwan is separated in to these groups:
Old and young
台商 or not
Was mainlander or not
When you have identities in the front, you either hope things will go just be like under kmt where it's pretty much just parallel lines between mainland and taiwan. (as you can see, old is dying out and "was mainlander feels" gets lessened through generations)
If not, it's more likely that they'd want independence, but with little understanding of why and how it's not possible to do so peacefully, unless ccp fucked up really badly.

>>76354379
Well, more like dealing with short-term independence factions though, it's just stupid to do so now
Ccp is in their golden age with ships, aircrafts and nuke while taiwan's got nothing to support them other than other cunts who might think that it's a great idea to do some proxy war
Tsai should just stop saying shit like not admitting 92共识 and be independent (long term) and ccp will feel that there's no need to put pressure
It's also a good timing for ccp to warn them again to avoid war though

>乡下感
Agreed
In addition, 乡下感 that doesn't come with crime is a great thing.
>>
>>76355283
When she's not kmt but ddp and she recognizes 92 consensus… that's not really realistic.
Kmt is pretty less triggering for ccp mainly because as long as they maintain as kmt, they'll act as expected and de facto independence is a thing that's not that bad for ccp too, as ccp can figure out the best timing to reunify.
Hence not kmt on board is still quite important, as it leads to all those events that will never happen of it's kmt on board (because cai will never be kmt)

They should visit some Bangladeshi factories where the walls collapse and it kills 3000 people.

18 suicides in a workforce of 1.3 million is the lowest rate in the world.

Just another anti-China meme meant to ruin China's image. In many ways, China is held to a far higher standard than other nations.
Brazil had 55,000 murders last year, and 40,000 suicides. It is ravaged by crime and drug cartels. The favelas are all over and there are many no-go zones for police. The economy shrunk 14% since 2013. They have prison riots where hundreds die. Their health officials collude with the meat industry to export rotten meat. The entire government is hilariously corrupt. Unemployment is over 15%.

I don't see nearly as many articles about Brazil's problems or India's or Indonesia's or Nigeria's, as I do about China or Russia's.

Technically, hasn't East Asia proved the laissez-faire development model to be suboptimal? East Asia as a whole (even Vietnam) have all developed in a similar way with extensive government control. Most weren't even "democracies" until the 1990's-2000's.

Didn't Tsai break with 25 years of agreement on the 1992 consensus?
That seems to be disrupting the status quo, anon.
It's also why China stopped diplomatic communication with the RoC.

Don't let your personal opinions blind you from reality. Tsai and the DPP changed the status quo, and China responded.
China didn't autism out and attack the KMT in early 2016. Only after Tsai in her first speech said they would not follow the 1992 agreement, did the recent shitshow begin.

I personally agree with Tsai, but I'm not gonna deny that she dindunuffin and did not change the status quo political relationship with China.

Even Chen 2000-2008 followed the 1992 agreement.

China would probably accept Taiwan having autonomy over its island if it did not challenge China's primacy in international forums or threaten its military security. But that's a difficult consensus to maintain in a democratic vote.

And just my 2c but if the USA was faced with a situation like Taiwan it would have been solved with bombs 30 years ago and the history buried by now.

>Are DPP's other policies also more popular than the KMT's
Sure, as it labels itself "democratic progressive", it obviously gives more attentions to people's livelihood. Its policies on youth employment, food security, social welfare and so on are definitely more attractive and agreed with people's demands than KMT given Ma fucked up economic pretty bad. The irony is that if they do really care about the livelihood of Taiwanese people, they should have already noticed the significance of market and labor force of Mainland and improved relationship with it. Anyway, it's pretty a sad thing that when it comes to Taiwan issues, everyone talks about independence or not instead of how people's lives are.

Let's say in theory some time in the far future the PRC decides it can afford to liberalize and democratize and all that crazy jazz. Would Taiwan still be intent on independence? I guess in other words, how much of their independence sentiment is due to truly feeling like a different country and how much of it is because they don't like the way the PRC is run?

Nowadays, Taiwanfags saying that the PRC is Commie and that's why they don't want to unify is just a fig leaf for racism.
If you actually read about the pro independence and deep green people on Taiwan, you will know that they pretty much base their entire independence notion on racism against 'subhuman mainlanders' these days.

It is genuine ethnic hatred, not just the 'we want freedumb n shit' that western press choses to focus on.

So, no.

Reunification even with a democratic China is impossible.

That's normal for a developing country. Still, racism against Chinese is several times worse than against Indians, who are even more 'babaric' due to less wealth and less development.
The simple answer is just fear. SEA and Chinese diaspora have thrived when China was as it's weakest by selling themselves out to the Americans and the Whites. Now, as China returns, they fear their status. Additionally, seeing how a country and people who used to be refugees and beggars to them now became a prominent superpower makes them very angry. They would prefer China staying poor and weak, so that they could make themselves feel better in their own slave-status to the White Man.

You know how it is to be a formerly unpopular student now becoming popular suddenly: Not the established Jocks hate you most - but your old nerd and loser friends who are now jealous. They let themselves get recruited by the establishment to contain you and pull you down again.

West Germans were just like you toward our eastern brothers: Arrogant, spiteful, even racist (totally forgetting that we are one race). All thanks to American cold war brainwashing, making us hate our own brothers as some sort of subhumans.

In the end, some East German cities nowadays have better growth rates than western ones.

>>
The reason for China to reunify isn't so much emotional or nationalistic, but geostrategic.

Taiwan offers deep sea harbours to the West Pacific, perfect for Chinese nuclear submarines to go out undetected and patrol with their nukes against the USA.
With those in place, the US hegemony in Asia is basically over.

As such, I guess that the CCP doesn't even care about Taiwan's people and industry. They don't have to spare them when invading, since all they ever want from Taiwan is it's geography as doorway to the deep Pacific waters.

If they have to Nuke the island, so be it. As long as Hualian AFB can be reused and Taibei and Tainan can be turned into PLAN war fleet home ports, even better.
