So, I learned this. Are there any other differences between British and American English that can cause a critical miscommunication (I found this critical because this would cause a serious consequence if it occurred in a joint military operation and such)?
Also, how do anglos deal with this kind of differences in everyday conversation? I mean, when you converse with an English speaker whose background you don't know and hear 'second floor', how do you know which one is meant? Do you guess it from the other side's accent or something, or do you make sure it?

pretty much but its largely the responsibility of the visitor to adjust to local changes. yanks use numbering systems a bit different generally to brits but the difference isnt that great:
