Bakersfield has a lot of Okies from the dust bowl I think. I know a guy whose family is from there and they sound like southern hillbillies apparently. He's really gay so he doesn't. I was curious about how they retained this accent, but I really don't want to spend any time in Bakersfield. God bless anyone from there

I've heard of the Bakersfield (country) sound and its connection with economic migrants from the great depression era. I think a few country music legends, especially of the rebel sort, hail from that city. Individual cities/municipalities having their own cultural identity independent of their wider region is a rare phenomenon anywhere, and especially so in the US, which is a very mobile society. But according to your replies, this example of cultural diversity isn't all that positive.
