>>
>>76318685
Depends on the 4th generation fighter. At the moment the cost of an F-35 is coming down, and will be a similar price to many 4th generation planes it will replace. It's true it has taken tens of billions to get to this point though.
>>
>>76318886
The F-22 does though. Granted, it is a bit odd that the F-35 doesn't, but it isn't as specialised in its role as the other jets in service that can supercruise, so that probably factors into it in some way - I don't know enough on the topic to be sure.
>>
>Gripen is the only single-engined jet that can supercruise
That's actually very impressive. Must be one hell of a powerful engine.
>>

And that's why it is the only 5th gen fighter in the world (if we are judging by american standarts for the 5th gen).

Supercruise isn't a concrete requirement for a 5th gen fighter though (although definitions do vary a bit).

Rafale has greater payload and range.

Gripen E has a larger radar and a 2-way datalink for the MBDA Meteor.

Gripen is also quite a bit cheaper to operate.
>>
>>76334959
And cheaper to purchase as well.
Rafale's strenghts are its payload and ECM suite.
>>
>>76335125
True.

They both have their pros and cons. It all comes down to what role the customer wants it to fulfill, and what their budget is.
>>
>>76335335
Honestly, the only reason people would buy the Rafale is because it's politically "neutral".
You could get a plane with the same capabilites for much cheaper, but it's either going to be American or Russian.

Even the Gripen's engine is American, which could mean trouble.

France has been known to sell weapons to basically anyone, the latest example between the ships for Russia. In the invasion of Kuwait, both sides were using French planes.

If you look at Rafale customers now, there's India, which uses both Russian and US airframes, Egypt is basically the same, and Qatar is also on the fence between the two blocks.

I guess the main selling point for the Gripen is that it is fairly new and prone to evolution, whereas the Vipers is already a 40 years old design.
>>
>>76335513
With the Americans going full retard on the F35, I think that the F16/F18 are on their last legs. The F18 assembly line will soon close, and the F16 will follow suit.

The future for European 4th generation fighters is probably quite good, at least in the coming 10-20 years.
>>
>>76335760
Boeing is really pushing their Advanced Super Hornet though, especially since Canada expressed doubts over the F-35, and I think the US Navy is still ordering some Super Hornets while the F-35 is being introduced into service.

I'm pretty sure the last F-16 contract will be India (if they win against the Gripen), the rest will be upgrades to the Viper standard.

As for Europlanes, it does look good, although the Typhoon might fall behind if no one other than the Brits start putting some effort into it.

And also, it's a bit worrying that there isn't even plans for a European-made 5th gen aircraft.

You're right though; as it stands, it doesn't look like Europe will progress beyond 4.5 gen aircraft for the next 20-30 years, whereas even Russia has a 5th gen aircraft in the pipeline.

Well they asked the US for F-35 details, and although it's far from a definitive contract, it looks like they don't intend to upgrade the Typhoon to replace their Tornados.

I haven't heard anything about a 5th gen from Eurofighter, as far as I know there's only the FCAS project with the UK, France, and possibly Germany, but that's a drone project.

As for Russia, classifying the T-50 as 5th gen is arguable.

Well the thing is, those engines are very much exposed, which severly impacts its all-aspect stealth capability.

And the problem with Russian (and Chinese) engine is the materials.

The designs themselves aren't bad, it's just they lack the knowledge in metallurgy to make western-grade alloys, especially monocrystaline fan blades.

>Well the thing is, those engines are very much exposed, which severly impacts its all-aspect stealth capability.
It might not be a good 5th gen fighter, but on paper it does meet any requirements I can find to be considered a 5th gen fighter (if they can get the new engines produced).

Improved corporate espionage to steal more designs from the West and Russia?
>>
>>76336745
Well yes, on paper it does. Its main flaw won't be its characteristics in my opinion, but rather the small number produced compared to the fuckload of F-35 that will be fielded worldwide.

Since India basically droped out of the PAK-FA project, I doubt it will see any export.

I fucking love the MiG-25, but even by Russian standards this shit was a bit crazy. They basically slapped some afterburners on a pair of cargo plane engines.

Would the the F-35 be a match for the PAK-FA? Or would the F22 be required in a one-on-one scenario?

>Since India basically droped out of the PAK-FA project, I doubt it will see any export.
What? I was just reading a news article the othe day about how India was set to receive PAK-FAs in the coming months.

My bet would be on the F-35, based on radar and missile performance, but it's just an educated guess, there's too little information (publically available, that is), to really know.

As for the PAK-FA, it's not completely stopped, I was wrong, and deliveries were indeed scheduled to start this year, but there seems to be a halt in the project over some financial issues.

Canards are only a problem for stealth if they have gaps that expose flat surfaces to radar. The F-22 prototypes and aborted F-35 prototype used canards.

I'm glad the two projects are merging, I just hope the Germans won't join.

>>76342003
I'm not entirely stupid.
Both planes were designed around the same time, and with the same idea of a multirole fighter, but the Rafale is clearly leaning towards air to ground more than anything, and vice versa with the Typhoon. The Tranche 1 could barely drop a GBU.

But both are getting better, now the Typhoon is very capable in terms of air to ground, and the Rafale finally got an AESA radar, and soon the Meteor
>>
>>76342080
Yep, you hit the nail on the head there - they are both great platforms that are constantly becoming more capable yet retain their distinct differences.
>>
>>76342003
>Still annoyed by that.

To replace the Harriers of course and they made a decision to save money that the two new aircraft carriers will be STOVL so that was that really. Britain is the only Level 1 partner so some 20% of the plane will be built here and contribute £1billion a year to the economy. Yeah they could buy some F-35a for other uses but their trying to save money at the moment.
>>
>>76342154
Oh, I understand the reasons fully. But the continuing penny pinching of the MOD just pisses me off. The RN could have had two world class carriers with uncompromised F-35Cs, but instead got both compromised carriers and jets.
