Were there black people in ancient Mayan society? I know they had a dark-skinned god but I've heard some rumour that they painted their bodies black as a sign of power and authority. Does anyone know for sure?

Yes but how dark? Were they as dark as they are now (light brown) or were they as dark as Cambodians/Indians/Sri Lankans/Bangladeshis, etc? I know they weren't straight up "black" but I can't seem to find an information on how dark they were.

mayans can be naturally as dark as the pic you uploaded. nowadays "mayans" are more light skinned due to the european mixing, no matter how isolated is the mayan you find, it has some european dna.
