I actually worked with the swedish/us government as a mediator between the west and NK. These cases are typical. Torture and just generally shitty living conditions take their toll on the prisonors. I don't doubt he could have possibly sustained the brain damage from botulism, as they claim, but im no doctor. Thing is, as much as they do torture and do other fucked up shit, i doubt theyd do it to a us prisoner. Western prisoners are held in better quality prisons than the NK native populations (still way below western standards though), and are generally guarded with much more care so as to not have the prisoner tell tales of the horrors of NK when released. They care about their image to the outiside world. Combine that with the crime not being that severe and him accepting responsibility and apologizing and id say theyd go easy on him.
But, hey, its not REAL communism after all, now is it?
