Why are many (not all) Russian people so serious during daily life? Like, during work and walking around but as soon as they are at home they are talkative and happy.

I've been told it's strange to smile at strangers in Russia and makes you look simple/ mentally ill.

Nothing against Russians, loved the place and people...Is this bullshit? or do people just act like robots until they get home?
