Because God is very real. I can actually feel Holy spirit's presence inside me right now. Without Holy spirit I wouldn't be a believer. It's personal proof that i'm God's child. If you pray Jesus ans accept him as your saviour you will get this same Spirit and proof. It's the only way to be certain that God really exist. It's a supernatural feeling and doesn't exist inside human if you are not a Christian. Once you get you will be 100% certain that it came directly from God.

It's impossible to find God if you are using imperfect mind and imperfect methods. (science) God will approach you not the otherway around. How do you now that God is close? If you seek salvation and feel that you want confess your sins you are almost there. All you have to do is pray Jesus and ask him to forgive all of your sins, do this and believe that Jesus is indeed God's only son and you will be saved.
