we have different perceptions of what a 'city' is.

Generally fit into two categories :

1) Tourist town with some local attraction nearby

2) a boring rural hub for farmers with a small supermarket, petrol station and a pub.

The towns that aren't dependent on tourism or farming will eventually grow into cities.

There's a reason all the dates are pre 20th century. The idealized "small town" America has nothing in common with actual America where small towns are just ideal targets for big box store expansion.

There's some genuinely cool spots still like family owned bars and diners where the older locals have been going for years and know each other but the majority of the country are the kind of fucking retards who think living next to the Walmart and the Buffalo Wild Wings/Amigos is being "close to everything".
