Athens was a little shit village when it was chosen to be the capital in the 1830s. It wasn't a good idea for a capital, literally just because its name was famous they put the capital there. And it was a bavarian king too, not even greek.

During the Middle Ages cities like Thessaloniki and Constantinople were much more important.
