山-pictogram for mountain
鳥+山= bird on mountain = island
we only use 島 to refer to "island" in daily life
the other characters can barely be found or even don't exist
they are logographic because meaning is not longer from the drawing
not because shapes give meaning but rather the meaning is inside the shapes
in other words, drawings of the same thing can mean many different things were if it was a pictogram it would not be possible
