My mother's family was from the central region. A lot of people got displaced and they were not the exception. After the war, we were relocated to Khe Sanh (part of the "new economic zones policy", the old site of intense battle. Lots of mines and unexploded ordinances remain in the soil. Every other day we'd have someone lose their legs or their lives because of it.
Then my grandma took my then young mother and together with a few others escaped further south and settled in a rubber tree plantation community.
Mum met dad there and I was born in '95. Despite being dirt poor in the countryside, I remember getting free vaccination which helped a lot since diseases like polio, measles and TB were rampant.
We moved to Saigon in 2003 and relocated 3 more times. It's stable now. I think the war was a mistake.

I haven't heard about airspace violations. We bought a few aircrafts a few years ago, it was Su-30MK2 I think. I don't know much about military stuff so I can't comment on this.

They didn't invade North Vietnam because fear of Chinese intervention. However, there's a number of reasons why that was unlikely. The PLA was in poor fighting shape in the mid-60s and enlisted men had almost no combat experience compared to the battle hardened veterans of the civil war who fought in Korea. Chinese ability to move and supply troops in an invasion of Vietnam was very limited. Also the Sino-Vietnamese border was not as strategically sensitive as the Korean border, which was near a large part of China's industrial and hydroelectric capacity, and only 200 miles from Beijing.

It's quite probably we could have taken out Hanoi with no Chinese response, and the Cultural Revolution simply made them even more unable to react. However, Beijing managed to bluff just enough that LBJ and McNamara weren't willing to take a chance.

Taking out Diem was also a criminally stupid mistake since he was a tough guy who knew how to hold the line against the Vietcong, and he also had legitimate credentials as a patriot during the independence war against the French. Most of the antiwar protesters on campus ironically were upper middle class spoiled kids who weren't subject to the draft anyway, conscripts were generally blacks and lower class redneck whites.
