Lesson #1
Subject: Greetings and introductions

Okay, here we go with the first part of my Lessons in Polish
To not get bored at the very beginning, we'll start with practice, and bring up some theory later

First of all, we'll learn some basic greetings
Often used one is "Dzień dobry" (literary - "Day good")
You can use it talking to anybody who ain't your friend or relative
Internet conversations are exception, you don't use "Dzień dobry" beside official e-mails and stuff like that
Don't worry about pronounciation, we'll concern about it later

If it's evening you can also use "Dobry wieczór", which means "Good evening"

The other one is "Cześć"
It's more informal, and used while talking to friends, relatives, or 4chan anons
Sth like english "Hi"


Second thing you ought to know is how to introduce yourself
There are several ways to do it:

The first one is to say "Nazywam się [first name + last name]"
It literary means "I am calling myself [...]" or "I am naming myself [...]" - pretty autistic, ain't it?
That's the way it goes, and it's sounds rather formal, but you can use it everytime you don't know how to introduce yourself

Other way to do it is to say "Jestem [first name (optionally also last name)]"
It literary means "I am [...]"
Simple
It's more informal way, used when you want to make some friends, or whatever normies usually do

And the last one, "(Ja) Mam na imię(/nazwisko) [first name]"
It's equivalent of "My name(/last name) is [...]", but means sth like "I have for name [...]" it doesn't make much sense in english though

But if somebody'll ask you about your name, you can just reply "[first name]", or sth like that, without necessity of using these constructions, it is sometimes more "natural"

Okay, now we'll learn how to ask somebody about his/her name
It's pretty straightforward, I'll describe here three ways to do it

"Jak masz na imię?" means "What's your (first) name?"
"Jak masz na nazwisko?" means "What's your last name?
And finally
"Jak się nazywasz?" which means "What is your full name (first+last name)?"

The last topic I'd like to cover in this lesson is how to say "Goodbye"
In informal situations you can use "Cześć", which is the same word that is used for greeting

You can also use "Dowidzenia" which is most often used way, and literary it means "Till the next time we'll meet (see each other)"
It's more formal than "Cześć"

And the last one is "Dobranoc" which means "Good night" and is used in the same way


And here are some examples:
A: Cześć, jak masz na imię?
B: Aneta
A: Ja mam na imię Krzysiek. Jak masz na nazwisko?
B: Kowalska
A: Ja mam na nazwisko Nowak.

Well, nobody would understand me, cause most foreigners don't know what e.g. "Lubelskie" is

But ok, I'll translate it:
"I'm from Lubelskie, people often say that our speach is little awkward
And I tried to speak clearly and distincly, but everyone can see the result"

Good thread, but I don't see why would anyone want to learn Polish.

There's obviously no logical reason
But the same is with many other languages people learn, e.g. I was learning quenya (artifical language made by Tolkien), because it sounds good, has nice writting system, and I like Silmarillion
Also, if you have to waste only few minutes per day while reading 4chan for it... I would learn even mongolian that way
