I don't think it's overrated but it's definitely romanticized like crazy. I've only ever lived in rural Sweden so I can't speak for the cities but compared to the rest of Europe (esp. Belgium, Italy, France) Scandinavia is kinda boring as far as history, architecture and culture goes.

but there's nothing particularly exciting about Scandinavian architecture imo. If I remember correctly everything is so simple and plain because there was a lack of supplies and everyone was poor so there wasn't money to build extravagant things like the rest of Europe.
