After learning kanjis "all the way" up to 4th grade. (638 total) I've started learning compound kanji readings.

I think it will be pretty tough to learn kanji the native way, they undergo years of seeing kanji with only X reading, then learn a few extra readings during highschool, you'll find yourself hard pressed to find study methods following that.
You can always go with Core 10k (or 30k) and see what cards it offers for each kanji you're learning next, just have a Wikipedia table of joyo kanji by grades (or refer to the Kanji Grid plugin table, sorted by grade).

James Heisig is the author of Remembering the Kanji, so I'd at least suppose it follows the same principles as RTK. It uses a mnemonics isolated kanji study method. You can see the pros and cons of the different methods here.

It works for learning to hand write. It does not work for learning Japanese. Many people do have learning to handwrite as their goal, and it does have benefits towards learning Japanese, but it's important to know what you are going for. If your main goal is learning Japanese and not learning to *write* Japanese then it would be a mistake to spend months on RTK while postponing your main goal.

I came across this just now and it appears to be a scheme where you pay ￥980 a month and gain unlimited access to a range of books, manga and magazines.
Unless Kindle have changed the way they handle their ebooks, I'd assume this would also mean that you'd be able to rip and strip anything downloaded to read through this service.

How I came across this service was while looking up a comic series and noticing the 0円 price tag on the Kindle option.You'd have to have a poke around to see what falls into this range of "free" books, etc. but it may be worth for some people if they are the type to normally buy and rip ebooks from the Japanese amazon store.

Is it useful to make English translations of whatever you're reading in Japanese? I've been doing this but it takes me a lot longer to get through content. I could maybe get the general idea of an article in 5 minutes or so but writing out a translation could take up to 20 minutes for me. Should I just use that time to read more instead?

I would really like to do the least possible while maintaining my current skill level, but how often do I need to read to stay in touch with the language?
Is reading a few hours once a week enough?

Does anyone have experience with extendend lengths of "minimum study" and how it affects your skills?

The kun/onyomi will come naturally as you learn more words, it's not a very good idea to just memorize them out of context. It'd be like learning all of the sounds the letter "a" makes before knowing any words that use the letter "a", not really useful. Stroke order diagrams can be added to Anki, I believe the guide can show you how to do that but they're also not too important if you're not going to learn to write or read something handwritten.

I don't think you know the phrase at hand. The dictionary 日本語表現文型辞典 (sorry I don't have a scan to link, only a paperback copy) basically grasps the construction of をひじめ as being linked to a noun that represents a larger group for the rest of the clause. "Including..." is a good place to start.

if you are very good at korean you could learn japanese simply because they are grammatically very similar so it's less of a time investment, and kanji would be interesting for korean too (as learning hanja is a waste of time unless you're into historical korean stuff).

i don't think learning both at the same time is optimal at a lower level though because you risk mixing them up a lot.

finding things to watch without annoying voices can be difficult. i like watching political/news and quiz shows. they're usually safe.

Korean is so accessible to me because there is just so much to watch in Korean. I wish I could get into anime, maybe I'm just not watching the right stuff since so many people are obsessed with it

well for starters あと normally takes a の, as in xのあと(で). You're right that the で from あとで can tend to get omitted though sometimes even the の as well. When this happens you'll usually get a pause or a comma to keep things in order, or it'll be the end of the sentence. If there's no comma or pause and they just launch straight into the next word then you can start to think maybe you've entered a subclause and start looking for the correct grouping.

You want to get at least halfway through a grammar guide before you try reading anything significant, otherwise you'll just be completely lost. Once you have the katakana though you can practice straight away by reading all the silly loanwords and brand names, which is fun in it's own way I guess.

If you have ~1k vocab and basic grammar down, just go read shit. Or even before then, it's not like reading is an exam you have to prepare for beforehand, you can figure it out as you go. Even if you don't understand everything, just look SOMETHING up and you'll have gained from the experience.

Hey, it's me again, bringing an update.

Today is my third day and I finished that episode's cards. I increased the limit every time I completely understood a card (simpler expressions, names, filler words and so on).

Even though I only have 780 seen cards on Anki and I'm still halfway through a grammar guide I can now understand that episode without English subs, though it did take me some very liberal usage of a dictionary.

I can recommend it for anyone that wants to get reading as soon as possible.

I didn't care much about the translated sentence. It served mostly just to tell me that I got it right/wrong, even if the translation tends to be very loose.

The way I usually did those cards is try and come up with a translation of the front and then flip it over to see if I got it right or not instead of trying to memorize the sentence and match it to the writing.
