I think you're referring to utilizing the identity sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1
certain powers will kind of mess up your integral and have you keep going in circles this way, so you would have to use a different method.
It's been a while, so I don't exactly remember which technique works for which case, but I might be able to help with specific examples
If you want to really understand it, you just have to play around with trigonometric integral and see for yourself why some methods don't work, while others do

It seems complicated at first, but once you understand it, it's really not that hard and it's about as complicated as calc 2 integrals get

for this I used u substitution with u=sinx and du=cosx dx

= integral(u^7 * (1-u^2)^2 * cosx dx)

= integral(u^7 * (1-2u^2 + u^4) du)
= integral(u^7 - 2u^9 + u du)
= (u^8)/8 - (u^10)/5 + (u^12)/12

and then replace the u and I'm pretty sure it's right.

Not all integrals are analytically solvable.

They don't usually let you solve integrals that are so far fetched, they give you something solvable

You can always come up with integrals that are unsolvable, the ones you get can always be simplified with one of the methods you learned in class.
Just go through all of the methods and you'll be good to go, don't overthink.
