It's the day of the death of Luís de Camões.

He wrote a nationalist epic poem (like the Odyssey or the Iliad) about Portugal and the Portuguese at our highest point (1572) called the Lusíadas that has 1000 and something stanzas.

It's about how Portuguese people (sailors at the time) were God's favourites and did everything despite the Ancient Greek gods being against us (remember this was the discoveries time where we we're officially spreading Christianity).

We can't pick the spelling either, and it will change with if any orthographic rules change, supposedly (although this never happens).

Like, if you say that the "ão" sound is now to be spelled "aum", every João will now be called Joaum.

This isn't expected to happen, of course, but it has happened in the 20th century, which is why we have Sousa's, but any migrants will be called Souza instead, and why we call Camões like that, but he spelt his name Camoens.

You're also excluded from this if one of your parent's isn't Portuguese, in which case you can pick whatever you like, but if they grow up as Portuguese citizens, they won't be able to pick weird names for their kids (aside from the surname, of course, which is inherited).
