you'll get different answers from everyone

personally, i think the best way is learn hiragana, start core 6k (start with 10 words a day). Commit to anki, learn katakana once you hit 500 words, once you're at 2000 words it's time to buy Remembering the Kanji cause you gonna need it by then.

fyi it'll take you about 3 months to hit 2000 words if you can bump it up to 15 words a day, but this is all dependent on how much time you can commit to studying

NEETS are capable of 50~100 words a day, but us normalfags can only do 20 a day max before we blow up.

If you have time to spare, keep your Anki deck at 10 words a day and only bump it when you become extremely comfortable

Instead, use your spare time to open up bonus outlets of learning to reinforce your japanese. Memrise is pretty good and has a Kanji deck downloadable, and when combined with tae kim and anki will make you feel like you're on the right track.

2. a filter for completed series.
3. an overhaul of the "select to highlight" filter, with some sort of showing/hiding selected genres instead of highlighting them.
4. an RSS feed, as per request.

There isn't any usefulness to reading genki under any circumstances, and practically nobody here recommends it. Just mentioning it without derision gives a pretty big indication that you've either come from reddit or a college course, although for now I accept that neither of those is necessarily true.

Yeesh, that seems like an unnecessarily large amount of work...
Really, there's just two main verb-types, plus a small number of irregular verbs, like suru, kuru and iku.
If you know how to conjugate "taberu", you can conjugate all other ichidan verbs, if you can conjugate "nomu", you can do the godan ones (except for the -te and -ta forms...)

Tae Kim is much more succint and you'll get done with it much faster.
Japanese the Manga Way is 'easier' because it takes that much more time with each concept, with a lot of examples.

At the end, I think (emphasis on think) that they should cover more or less the same ground.

Generally Tae Kim is more production focused, trying to equip you with useful ways to express yourself, whereas JTMW is much more targeted towards things which might confuse you while you're reading, with it's large section on rhetorical questions and so on. In any case I would recommend reading them both, they're not that long and won't try and waste your time with exercises.

For onegaishimasu and kudasai, Genki says there's a trailing o that can be applied, but when should I use it? In the dialogue examples it uses o kudasai, but the chapter doesn't explain it further than that example.

I get what's going on in this panel; the lizard is saying that nobody will believe what that woman says. However, I'm having trouble breaking down this phrase. Is that 信じ as a noun meaning belief, followed by the は particle, followed by an abbreviated せない? And if that last part is せない, is that simply an old form of する? Or is it an abbreviated form of the causative させる?

I suppose I would say I'm intrigued. I'm only on the fourth chapter and it's pretty slow going for me because of wordiness, 関西弁, and some archaic speech patterns. I not as much of a fan of the more cartoonish art style, but it might grow on me.

Storywise I really have no idea where it's going yet. Everything is still pretty mysterious at this point. I've heard many good things about this manga so I'm hoping for the best.

Still do that now, as an adult. It's more an act of getting used to producing different sounds (plus the 'tism, let's be honest) although whatever "language" I pretend to emulate, almost all of it sounds based on Japanese phonetics.
Do the same sort of thing with English as well, using different accents. It's probably rather mental but people have always found my different accents enjoyable, so at least it results in being more of a clown and less of a raving lunatic.

You will need N2 to even qualify for MEXT

If you don't have N2, the MEXT is gonna force you to attend language school in japan which can take you anywhere from 6 months to 2 years max, before you can even attend gras school

I don't think you realize how brutal language school in Japan actually is.

It's so brutal you have no time for even a part time job or any kind of socializing outsde school.

If you want to have time for that stuff, you'll have to attend the 2-year language school. The difference between the 6 month JLS and the 24 month is the 6month is brutal. If you get left behind in the 6month JLS you're just fucked and there's no catching up for you, you're done.

Your JLS career in Japan will be at least 12 months unless you can prove you can handle the 6month routine.

Can anyone tell me how 上 is usually read when it's a suffix? For example, in 外見上 the 上 is not normally part of the word; do I read it as じょう or うえ?

I think you use 義理堅い(ぎりがたい).
恭しい is rarely used.

A woman is talking to the listener about how she lost her four sons in a war, and she is talking about the fate of the last one:
「最後に残った末っ子のヨトスは、兄達の分まで頑張ると、そしてわたしにきっと生きて帰るからと言って出かけていって、二度と帰ってきませんでした」
Official translation:
"The last survivor, my baby, Yotos, tried to play a man's role as well and ran away, leaving a note. It said: 'I love you; Mama.And I'll come back to you. I promise.' But he never came home."

So they messed around with the translation a bit, which is not helping with a literal translation of this line. I can't tell what is quotation and what is not quotation. Is "兄達の分まで頑張ると、そしてわたしにきっと生きて帰るから" the son's quotation? If so I assume this is an "indirect" one since the use of わたしに.

兄達の分まで頑張ると describes the manner/reasoning of what he did. It's kind of like if it had 思って after the と followed by the rest of it. 「きっと生きて帰るから」と is what the son actually said.
