Unironically, because dogs can't be kept in small apartments (Very common from 1950 to today) other than the shitbreed small ones. So people got cats instead. Doesn't even need much to take care of.

kots give a beneficial disease called toxoplasmosis that makes you be suicidal and have erratic behaviour, they turn russians into perfect soldiers so its kinda like a symbiotic relationship between them

I think it's because of living conditions.
Keeping a kot on a 12th floor in a commieblock is easier.
They're also more maintenance-free pets.

My parents used to have a dog. I loved him dearly.
But he died from old age, my parents moved to a 4th floor without an elevator and owning a dog would be a huge pain in the ass. So they got a kot.

People with a large apartment, people with houses and especially people with their own piece of land can afford a dog. Who the fuck wants these chihuahua/yorkshire terrier sized rats anyways.
